«We want half of our vehicles to be electric or hydrogen-powered by 2025, and are aiming to switch completely to zero-emission mobility by 2030. With a total of 2400 vehicles involved, this is certainly an ambitious goal.»

Saskia Günther, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Swisscom

Saskia, Swisscom purchased 100 Škoda Enyaq iV vehicles. Why did you choose this model? What were the requirements that dictated your choice?

The key criteria were size, boot capacity, range and price, as well as comfort and style. We are pleased to have the Škoda Enyaq iV as the first electric vehicle on the market that meets all our requirements and can directly replace existing passenger cars with combustion engines.

Why was this step not taken sooner?

Swisscom is the first Swiss company to switch to electric vehicles on this scale. So far, however, there were no vehicles that met our operational requirements.

Why is Swisscom adding electric vehicles to its fleet? Is this part of an overall strategy?

We want to fulfil our responsibility towards the future, and have been committed to sustainability for 20 years. Swisscom has been a climate-neutral company since summer 2020, thanks partly to carbon offsetting. We are aiming to make our vehicle fleet, which is responsible for around 10% of operational carbon emissions, climate-neutral in the long term with no need for offsetting. Switching to electric vehicles will enable us to significantly reduce our emissions.

Will the whole Swisscom vehicle fleet be gradually converted to electric mobility? What is the time frame? And will you continue to focus on the Škoda Enyaq iV?

We want half of our vehicles to be electric or hydrogen-powered by 2025, and are aiming to switch completely to zero-emission mobility by 2030. With a total of 2400 vehicles involved, this is certainly an ambitious goal. Our vehicle fleet is highly diverse and also includes commercial vehicles, which is why we will be dependent on additional models in the medium term.

Which vehicles (petrol, diesel, hybrid models) will be replaced?

In a first step, our focus was on representative vehicles and estate cars, especially 4x4s. So far, 80% diesel and 20% petrol and hybrid vehicles have been replaced.

Where will these Škoda Enyaq iVs be used?

Most of the Škoda Enyaq iVs will be used by Swisscom employees from B2B and IT, Network & Infrastructure, and 25% will go to Cablex, a 100% Swisscom subsidiary that specialises in the construction, maintenance and operation of ICT and network infrastructure solutions.

What about the charging situation? Where can the employees who drive the electric vehicles actually charge the batteries?

Our employees can “fill up” on electricity conveniently at home, and Swisscom contributes to the installation costs of a private charging station.

What is your personal view of electric mobility?

Mobility is a key issue for me as a result of my career so far. I’m extremely interested in following the progress being made in the area of sustainable mobility. Personally, I use the train or my e-bike whenever possible. A car with a combustion engine is still sitting in my garage, but my future will also definitely be electric.
